Salomon de Brosse was the architect commissioned for the Palais du Luxembourg and gardens. The fountain may have been built by Thomas Francini under his direction. In 1811 Chalgrin did a Neoclassical restoration. The later iconography includes the figure of the jealous Cyclops (Polyphemus, above and in a niche), who waits to crush the lovers Acis and Galatea.
