The towering rock formations flanking a deep ravine are notably similar to a drawing that the artist himself titled Paysage d’Italie, ravins de Sorrente and dated August 18, 1834 (Musée Fabre, Montpelier). The locale depicted in the drawing is the Neopolitan region of Italy, which is also consistent with the rich golden light of the painting.
