Meissonier’s intention for the completed painting, entitled 1807, Friedland (1861-75, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), was to illustrate \"the love, the adoration of the soldiers for the great Captain in whom they had faith, and for whom they were ready to die.\" It is not so much a victory celebration as a tribute to the relationship between the French Army and its commander.\r\rfrom Weisberg, Breaking the Mold: The Legacy of the Noah L. and Muriel S.
