The main Greek fountain in town was the Lower Peirene. The Upper Peirene was housed within an underground chamber atop Acrocorinth. In general Corinthian spring-houses were designed to gather ground-water into basins after the water had been drawn from the surrounding terrain slope by means of manmade tunnels.
