About Portfolios
What is a portfolio?
The Portfolio tool provides members of the Notre Dame community with a flexible space to organize and manage digital content in ways that are meaningful to them. Users can browse, search, and easily save items of interest into portfolios for future viewing.
Portfolios make it possible to bring together digitized items from across campus and organize them for a variety of purposes, including developing course materials, supporting individual scholarship, or collaborating with others.
Annotations can be added to individual items throughout the site to help users organize, reflect on, and document insights over time.
Users have control over viewing preferences—portfolios can remain private for individual use or be shared with students, campus peers, or the public.
How to create a portfolio
Step 1: Create a Marble account
New users must first log in via Okta with a Notre Dame NetID or create an account using a username and password (select groups only).
Step 2: Create a portfolio
- Once logged into the Marble dashboard, click the Portfolios tile on the dashboard or select Portfolios from the sidebar.
- Click the Create New button at the top of the page.
- All of your portfolios—both public and private—will be accessible from the Portfolios collection page in the CMS and from the My Portfolios page on the Marble website when you are logged in.
Step 3: Set up your portfolio
- Enter a name for your portfolio.
- (Optional) Check the box to display the portfolio on the "Featured" page of the Marble website (portfolio visibility must be set to Public).
- Provide a brief description of your portfolio.
- Set the portfolio’s visibility and designate user permissions.
- Save your portfolio.
Step 4: Add content to your portfolio
- To add items, click the Add Items button.
- Items can also be added directly from an individual item page or from the Search page on the Marble website.
- When logged in, click Add to Portfolio to open a modal where you can select the portfolio to which the item should be added.
Step 5: Customize your portfolio
By default, the first item added to a portfolio becomes the cover image (unless a Default Image is selected), and items are saved in the order they are added.
- Reorder items by dragging and dropping item cards.
- Assign a custom title or add an annotation by clicking the Edit icon in the upper right corner of the item card.
Note: The portfolio must be saved after adding an item before item-level edits can be made.
Teaching with portfolios
Portfolios can be used to support teaching and learning at the University in a variety of ways, including:
- Engagement: Select materials, add descriptive context, and share portfolios with students for review prior to class discussion.
- Scholarship: Ask students to discover, organize, and collect materials in their own portfolios as part of larger assignments or individual research.
- Assessment: Enable students to interact with materials and apply what they have learned. By organizing and annotating portfolio content, students can demonstrate understanding and engage with primary sources in new ways.
