Natal'ya Goncharova's early work reveals the influence of European avant-garde style. However, she quickly developed a profound interest in Russian peasant art and medieval icon painting. Her art evolved under these influences into a cultivated primitivist style. Printemps, which means "springtime" in French, is composed of patterns of flat color and floral motifs drawn from the peasant embroideries and popular wood engravings that Goncharova so admired. The three fields of the painting, in which the floral motifs gradually increase, may symbolize the changing of the seasons.
