Benedictine Monastery, Catania: Raking view of the facade
Date
Circa 1910
Location
Architecture Library, Hesburgh Libraries
The cathedral dome is visible in the background. A large and unusually rich monastery with ties to the Catanian nobility. This monastery was the second largest in Europe after Mafra in Portugal with an extensive library. The monastery stands next to the unfinished Basilica of San Nicola l'Arena (1687). It is now the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy for the University of Catania.
