Asafo Military Society Flag
Raclin Murphy Museum of Art
This flag was made by a local military company, called Asafo, in an area of Ghana once known as the Gold Coast, which was a central point of the transatlantic trade routes between Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Local Asafo military companies were important for keeping the coast secure. Each of these Asafo military companies had unique flags with illustrated messages. The messages of this Fante flag reinforced the physical strength and military might of the company leader, Abrambohen, symbolized by his control of the three-headed dragon and elephant.
