Angular Pipe
Raclin Murphy Museum of Art
This pipe, carved from a single piece of hard stone, is a technical achievement. To create the pipe, the artist drilled a hole, possibly using a pump drill, down a 10-inch bowl and a 12-inch stem and made them both meet perfectly. This process represents a significant amount of labor on the part of the artist.Trace amounts of tobacco are adhered to the interior of the bowl, demonstrating it had been used. At the base of the front wall of the bowl, a small plug of stone was carved out to allow the stem to be more effectively cleaned.
