ca. 1720

Raclin Murphy Museum of Art

Upon Gillot’s death in 1722, an inventory of the artist’s belongings listed a "carton of drawings for the Life of Jesus Christ," among other drawings. The series of sixty scenes was published as prints by Gabriel Huquier (1695–1772) before 1740. The Snite drawing was the source for the print showing John the Baptist pouring water over Christ’s head, while the Holy Spirit descends from above, surrounded by angels and cherubs. from Snay, The Epic and the Intimate: French Drawings from the John D.
