This tonal drawing depicts three men and a dog on a boat. Besnard situates the boat on a diagonal at the center of a vertical composition. Water surrounds his subjects on all sides. The figure on the left stands in a powerful pose with his hands on his hips while the man in the center gazes down at the water, engrossed in the act of rowing. The companion on the right is also seated and appears to be signaling to someone outside the frame with his right hand. Besnard’s soft and hazy forms convey a sense of ambiguity while his attention to detail in the illustration of the dog and rifle on the standing figure’s back suggests this is a hunting scene. The work is signed "A. Besnard" in the lower right and contains inscriptions: "0.23" "189" and "3[?]41," on the verso. written by Emma Lyandres, St. Andrews University, Scotland, 2022
