Charles-François Daubigny was an important French landscape painter of the Barbizon School and one of the earliest exponents in France of the practice of painting out-of-doors. La Moisson [The Harvest] is typical of his landscapes. It reflects the artist’s love of the countryside and is notable for its almost Dutch atmospheric effects and uncrowded [spacious] composition. The work relates to a somewhat later version of the same subject in the Louvre. Both paintings were praised by critics for their luminous colors, fluid atmosphere, and simple motifs. from Snite Museum of Art, Selected Works: Snite Museum of Art (Notre Dame, 2005)
