Many celebrities of the 1950s posed for full-length portraits in Penn's claustrophobic corner--authors, actors, musicians, and artists--but Marcel Duchamp was among the first. Here, unperturbed by the set, the elegant Duchamp leans back into the corner, appropriated for his own comfort while waiting for the photographer to complete his work. He gazes directly into the lens, with a confident defiance. from Acton, A History of Photography at the University of Notre Dame: Twentieth Century (Notre Dame, 2019)
