David Smith was one of the twentieth century's most influential American sculptors. He is best known for the welded and burnished stainless-steel sculptures he created between 1959 to 1965, at the height of his career...Smith initially trained as a painter and was influenced by Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, and European modernism...Smith maintained that there was no essential difference between painting and sculpture. The vigorous and lively brushwork that characterizes this sketch parallels the forceful and dynamic quality of his large sculptures. Here, the artist used lyrical, rhythmic line over bold, abstract planes to create a work that reveals his mastery in form. from Snite Museum of Art, Selected Works: Snite Museum of Art (Notre Dame, 2005)
