This panel fragment came from the site of Palenque in what is now the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The inscription describes how a new structure was being dedicated to the king of Palenque, whose name was Chak-Upakal-K’inich [Ajaw] K’an-Joy-Chitam ("the shield of the Resplendent [Lord] is red; the shell-dressed boar"). The inscription then refers to the ruler as the "divine Baakal lord." Finally, the inscription states that this building was commissioned in honor of the king by another noble named Ajaw Chalam. This text and the building were made during the reign of K’inich K’an-Joy Chitam, who rose to power in 702 CE and ruled until around 720 CE.
