Portrait of a Man

Date

ca. 1815-1820

Creator

Location

Raclin Murphy Museum of Art

The sitter, with his open chemise and windswept hair, is striking for his bold, romantic air. This impression is heightened by the storm clouds brewing behind him and by his pensive, slightly distracted expression. Though the man’s identity has yet to be confirmed, physiognomic similarities with Jarvis suggest that the work may be a self-portrait. The painting’s verve and dash support this, as Jarvis had a flamboyant personality and a distinct flair for the dramatic. from Snite Museum of Art, Selected Works: Snite Museum of Art (Notre Dame, 2005)
