Edgeworth Family drawing album
One bound volume of drawings in various media (pencil, crayon, or ink, some with watercolor washes in color or grayscale). Drawings vary from about 3 cm x 3 cm to an entire page in size. Each has been trimmed from its source and tipped in or laid down on album plates; most plates contain multiple drawings. Images range from simple studies or sketches to finished, toned drawings. Two paper cut-work silhouette images also laid in; one mounted watercolor portrait of an Asian woman in traditional costume inserted between final pages.
Images range in content, and include portraits of people from diverse backgrounds including the Edgeworth family and other members of genteel society, as well as laborers, craft workers, and ordinary country folk. The images also depict Edgeworth home life, rural scenes, animals, buildings, ships, and decorative motifs. A number of the works appear to be illustrations for stories written by Maria Edgeworth.
The sketches are largely unsigned though most are attributed to Frances Anne Edgeworth and Charlotte Edgeworth. Other Edgeworth children, Honora, William, Harriet, Lucy Jane, and Michael Pakenham, are likely to have contributed.
