This is an example of an iconic style of Zapotec vessel depicting a bat claw. Bats often appear in Zapotec artwork. Throughout Mesoamerica, bats are associated with death and sacrifice. Because of this association, bat effigy urns and vessels depicting bat feet were often included in burials.
