i. Posters, Flyers, and Broadsides
The Pfefer collection includes more than 250 different wrestling posters, ranging in date from the 1920s to the 1960s. Most are American, though there are examples from Mexico, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Belgium, and elsewhere. Later examples, from the 40s on, are typically offset lithographs advertising individual promotions. Earlier examples are generally dedicated to specific wrestlers. Of particular importance are about a dozen chromolithographic portrait posters printed mostly by Coffey & Herman and Illinois Litho, both of Chicago, showing Wladek Zbyszko, Parelli, Santel, Judson, Stecher, Steinke, Gardini, Sonnenberg, Stanislaw Zbyszko, and other notable wrestlers of the 20s. Sizes range from sheets of over 50 inches to sheets measuring around 11 by 14 inches. This subseries also includes examples of other graphic formats, including broadsides and flyers.
