Divination Basket with Sixty-One Ritual Objects

Date

mid-20th century

Creator

Location

Raclin Murphy Museum of Art

This divination set, like many others made by the Chokwe, makes use of an extraordinary array of forest and trade products. Fibers made from a forest tuber make up the majority of the basket, along with animal fur. Ivory and animal and insect parts make up the individual kapele, along with a variety of woods, metals, ceramics, gourds, seeds, pods, vines, cloth, vegetable products, and coatings. Many are intricately carved and assembled. from Morton, Dimensions of Power (South Bend, 2018)
