This is one of 160 drawings Fragonard produced to illustrate the sixteenth-century author Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando Furioso. It depicts canto 15, verse 71, the battle among Aquilante, Grifone, and Orrilo. from Snay, The Epic and the Intimate: French Drawings from the John D. Reilly Collection (Notre Dame, 2011)
