This is a charming example of the neoclassical portrait drawings made popular at the turn of the century by Jacques-Louis David. The nondescript background and the chair inspired by ancient antiquities, in addition to the hairstyle à la grecque and the diaphanous dress, signal a fashionable woman enjoying a tender moment with her child. from Snay, The Epic and the Intimate: French Drawings from the John D. Reilly Collection (Notre Dame, 2011)
