Sainte Marie Fountain, Rouen: Overall view
Date
Circa 1910
Creator
Location
Architecture Library, Hesburgh Libraries
Despite the name, the fountain is a city fountain with allegorical civic iconography. The sculpture is by Joseph Falguiere representing the city of Rouen at center, on a ship representing the Rivers surrounded by symbols of industry, agriculture and commerce. The stone is poor quality and has been restored several times, the latest in 1983. The fountain covers an underground reservoir still in use by the city.
