The Baroque tower was rebuilt following a fire in 1679. The former Dominican church of St Paulus was begun 1520; it was damaged many times and rebuilt (1679; 1830; 1968). The larger religious buildings were generally constructed of limestone, imported at first from Tournai but later replaced by Brabant stone. Today the church, decorated in a baroque style, still houses a very rich collection of 17th century paintings of Flemish masters, including Rubens. The tower was rebuilt after 1679. The high altar is by Peter I Verbruggen and his son Peter II (1670).
