Hittorff's last work was the Gare du Nord (1861-1864), an iron-framed train shed with a façade incorporating Greek columns and pediments together with wide arches; on this project he worked in close collaboration with company architects. Hittorff was an innovator, like the rationalists Henri Labrouste, Louis Duc and Félix-Jacques Duban.
