Ancient Corinth: Fountains: One of the Roman fountains beneath Acrocorinth

Corinth was well known for its fountains, many of which were restored in the Roman period. The main Greek fountain in town was the Lower Peirene. The Upper Peirene was housed within an underground chamber atop Acrocorinth. In general Corinthian spring-houses were designed to gather ground-water into basins after the water had been drawn from the surrounding terrain slope by means of manmade tunnels. In most cases the fountain-houses had behind them one or more large storage reservoirs.
